Children’s Day on May 5th
Children’s Day, or Boy’s Festival is on May 5th in Japan. Traditionally, it was called “Tango no sekku”. The origin of it can be traced back to the Chinese tradition of exorcism. On this day, we celebrate children’s happiness, their health and growth and eat Chimaki (Rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) or Kashiwa mochi (Rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves).
